The another side of the mirror … more

Alice of Inbetween.

Welcome to an intellectual game. Once enticed into constructing structures of artistic imagination, you will get embedded, encapsulated in fabulous cycles which has been insistently carried out – The Space of Travel, Landscape in a Box, The Unknown Kingdom, Back to Basics, The Mirror Phase – geometry crashing with colour developing 3D illusions in contrast to flat figures. Presence will get spatial, illusory, sophisticated in a marvel of occurring colour and even eternal.

A painting is mainly the source of the search: incessantly continued studies of the effect by particular elements of a painting. Interpretation is often a form of creative deconstruction. Kowalik analyses and deconstructs paintings of old masters, and lately also those of his own, interprets them, and on this basis he creates a new quality. A new reality, contemplating new possibilities of combining existing components, by splitting and later merging them into new shapes. Believing in the infinite space of a well-painted piece.

Analyzing not only to discover the paintings ultimate meaning, which in the case of best quality masterpieces is absolutely impossible, but in order to prove again that one more version of meaning is possible – this time his and your own. It is all based on the trust in value of both the original piece and the creative development of the new artwork, based in some kind of a third perspective, that “triton genos”, some space beyond any categories, beyond rational senses of meanings, opinions, associations, hidden truths, concealments, commendations, abuses – a space inbetween of any spaces – open to the dissemination of belief.

“It is very difficult to create a wholly flat image”. Trying to put himself in the viewer’s position, Marcin Kowalik holds an on-going artistic discussion with what is created on the canvas. When we leave a painting behind, we are left only with a subjective aftervision that we take with us and which continually changes and constructs itself anew. Like Alice, we try to step into the picture with our thoughts and carry away what we can in terms of comprehension and wonder. Even when a work lays bare its devices, revealing how it is put together, we are still left with this notion of ‘another side’, of an object perhaps tantalizingly close, but always out of reach – whichever side of the mirror you are standing on.
