A subtle but very direct horizontal interference within a silent expanding space. An interference as just one gesture by sawing into the blue monochrome, opening up the tight boundaries of the geometrical square. — 34,5 x 4,5 cm

An intervention in a Dutch landscape. The mist of the blue cloud (Kersten threw blue chalk towards the horizon and took a photo) interferes and works with the bad quality JPG and its RGB pixels/dots. There’s a merging of immaterial to material and the other way around. — Unlimited edition with variable sizes.

By sanding the aluminium sandwich plate on the left panel, a dark but very fine grey substance (dust) is produced that is placed on the right panel and becomes a monochrome. The left panel is a cloudy image which is ‘intrinsic’ as looking through a small window into the cloudy distance. The right panel – in contrary – is very physical and ‘here’ - as in close to the spectator - and not distant but present: it is defined mostly by its materiality. A diptych of these two elements denies the impression of a strong duality between the two. — 40 x 50 cm

HSD - Hic Sunt Dracones (here are dragons) - stems from the original ‘Hic Sunt Leones’ (here are lions), a description used in ancient maps to describe an unfamiliar land – a terra incognita. The aluminium sandwich plate is a material that, when cut and folded, it relatively easy blends into the architecture of a space: a corner is a place where lines of a space connect, where there is a tension in space because of the connections that are made. The folded aluminium pieces let themselves be placed in unconventional ways and unconventional places within the exhibition space, creating a new space. Le fantôme réel is about the reality of the image and about the painting as an illusionary ‘window’ to a ‘another reality’. On the one hand the viewer is invited to look into the painting looking for depth, on the other hand the viewer’s gaze is pulled out of this invitation and is confronted with the physical aspects of the material. It is very material orientated, at the same time its shape is just a thin vertical line with a vanishing colour saturation from dark purple to grey and white.
